Welcome to nossob.co.za

Nossob.co.za is all about nature, Africa and overland travel.  Southern Africa has everything a nature lover and explorer can wish for – the great open spaces of the Karoo and Kalahari, wildlife in abundance, and wild, isolated places, far away from the daily routine of cell phones, traffic jams and the internet.

“What is nossob?”, you may ask.  Well the word Nossob means black river in the bushman language, Khoi-Khoi.  The Nossob river has it’s origin in the Gobabis area in Namibia, at the confluence of it’s two tributaries, the Black Nossob and the White Nossob.  It is quite apparent that the person(s) who named these two rivers did not understand the meaning of the word Nossob – resulting in names meaning white black river and black black river!  Clever, these Westerners, weren’t they?  The Nossob then flows into South Africa at Union’s End.  From there it forms the border between South Africa and Botswana as it winds it’s way through the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.  Just north of Twee Rivieren the Auob river  joins the Nossob, and it’s flow ends at it’s confluence with the Molopo river just south of the reserve.

The Nossob river, as many dry riverbeds in Africa, plays a very important role in the desert-like ecosystem as found in the Kalahari.  It is an essential source of nutrients and grass for the herbivores, and for that reason they congregate in the riverbed.  This then attracts the famous Kalahari lion, cheetah, leopard and other predators!
